The United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS) rated as the best health service in the world by the respected US-based global health thinktank Commonwealth Fund marked its 70th anniversary in 2018. Unsurprisingly, several events were held in celebration of that milestone.
A key aspect of the celebrations was honouring the 1.7 million
multinational workforce that drive the NHS – the 5th largest in the world. As Nigerians in particular constitute one of the top ten nationalities that make up this incredible workforce, the Nigerian Healthcare Professionals UK (NHCPUK) equally deemed it fit to recognise the immense contributions of its members to the NHS.
This was done under the auspices of the NHS@70 Excellence Awards held on Saturday 23rd March 2019 at the prestigious Grange City Hotel in London.
In attendance were a number of special guests including the Nigerian Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, the Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Adesola Oguntade, the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri, Marie Gabriel CBE, Lord Victor Adebowale CBE and a host of others. A goodwill message was also received from the UK Prime Minister, Mrs Theresa May.
Honoured at the award night was a group of professionals of Nigerian origin adjudged as the 70 Most Outstanding Nigerian Healthcare Professionals in the UK based on their exceptional services to the NHS.
The 70 awardees emerged from a list of 207 shortlisted finalists selected from a total of 312 nominations. They come from various disciplines including medicine, nursing, academia, research, leadership and management.
The Founder of MyMedicalBank and Senior Cancer Information Analyst at Barts Health NHS Trust, London, Mr Ayo Adebamowo was privileged to be named among the 70 awardees. In their citation about him, the judges said; “Adebamowo demonstrated a range of roles throughout career all very health and patient focused”.
The honours brochure distributed at the event reported Mr Adebamowo as having undertaken a number of critical health analytics assignments at hospitals across London, Essex, Hertfordshire and Sussex including at UK’s largest NHS Trust, Barts Health, some with findings widely reported in the British news media.
Also reported was Mr Adebamowo’s extensive contributions to the development of the health sector in Nigeria through the revolutionary MyMedicalBank, a suite of cloud-based applications that securely connect patients with healthcare providers via a smartphone for timely access to health care and health information and MMB HomeCare dubbed the Uber of the health sector in Nigeria.
Mr Adebamowo in turn dedicated the award to the fantastic colleagues he has been privileged to work with in the NHS and MyMedicalBank, a few of whom include Seun Adewuyi, Sola Adebayo, Bunmi Obademi-Akinremi, Noah Naheem and numerous others.
